Freedom through discipline. People have told me that this makes no sense - that freedom is the opposite of discipline. Actually discipline is necessary for freedom. You must exercise discipline in order to do the things that are necessary in order to have the freedom to achieve your goals. Example: If your goal is to be a basketball player, then you need to practice and study and condition your body -- difficult tasks, but necessary to becoming a player. So what if you elect to watch TV and nap instead? Then you won't be able to achieve your goal and that option -- that freedom to become what you want to become -- will be taken away. You must have the discipline to do whatever it takes to be free to achieve your goals. It's no different if your goal is to be a doctor or a computer scientist. It takes discipline to make yourself do the work that is necessary to have the freedom to achieve your goal. |
